The Chilean Navy in 1870 began a hydrographic expedition of the Aysén region, for which the displacement of the Chacabuco Corvette was arranged, under the command of frigate captain Enrique Simpson Baeza, with the aim of collecting the information from the area between the archipelago of Las Guaitecas and Los Chonos, the Aysén river, and the Patagonian canals.

On March 5, Simpson discovers an appropriate bay for his ship, which he calls "Puerto Chacabuco", due to the name of his corvette.
